Production Designer Molly Hughes spent more than a decade working as an Art Director, most notably in London on six of the Harry Potter franchise films with Academy Award-winning Production Designer Stuart Craig. She also served as an Art Director on Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and as Supervising Art Director on Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy.
Since making the leap to Production Designer in 2012 with director Max Nichols’ Two Night Stand, starring Miles Teller, she has worked with several Oscar-winning directors, including Ron Howard, Amy Berg, Charlie Kaufman, and Norwegian director Joachim Trier (Reprise, Oslo August 31st, Thelma) on his first English language film, Louder Than Bombs.
Hughes designed the highly acclaimed box office success The Fault in Our Stars, for Temple Hill Entertainment and Fox 2000, with director Josh Boon – a collaboration revisited for Boone’s next film, X-Men: The New Mutants, to be released in April 2020.
She recently wrapped production in the UK on the Walt Disney motion picture, The One and Only Ivan (based on Katherine Applegate’s Newberry Medal-winning and best-selling novel) with acclaimed theater and film director Thea Sharrock to be released in August 2020.
Following another exciting collaboration with Charlie Kaufman for his film I’m Thinking of Ending Things for Netflix, Molly is currently working with director Ron Howard on his film adaptation of JD Vance’s novel Hillbilly Elegy, starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close.
Molly has her MFA in Set Design from Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, where she is a guest lecturer when her schedule permits. She is focused on narrowing the gender gap in the field of film production design, where women make up approximately 20% of the profession. https://womenandhollywood.com/guest-post-the-production-designer-gender-gap-2ebb13eb0699/
