Set amidst the financial crisis that devastated Cuba during the early 1990s, Los Frikis tells the harrowing story of a punk band that knowingly infected themselves with HIV in order to be admitted to a government sanitorium, where they hoped to gain relief from abject poverty. Mariestela Fernandez’s costume designs capture the look and aesthetics of the real-life movement that inspired this powerful story. Starring Adria Arjona and Hector Medina, Los Frikis opens in limited theatrical release on December 20 before expanding nationwide on December 25.
