Lee Sang-Il’s epic Kokuho spans 50 years in the life of Kikuo, the son of a Yakuza leader who dedicates himself to kabuki. He studies under famous kabuki actor Hanjiro (Ken Watanabe) and soon develops a rivalry with Hanjiro’s son Shunsuke (Ryusei Yokohama). The two young men spend their lives in fierce competition to become the next great kabuki actor. Yohei Taneda’s rich, detailed production design perfectly captures five decades of Japanese history.
Kokuho will release in theaters on Friday, November 14. More information on theatrical locations and showtimes can be found here.
